I love seeing people out walking. Seriously, it’s great. Getting outside, moving your body, clearing your head — all good things.
But I want to be real with you for a second.
Walking alone is not going to get you where you want to go.
Here’s why.
Walking is low intensity. Your body adapts to it quickly and stops being challenged. You burn some calories, sure, but you are not building muscle. And muscle is everything.
Muscle is what keeps your metabolism running as you age.
Muscle is what protects your joints and keeps you out of pain.
Muscle is what helps you pick up your kids or grandkids without throwing your back out.
Muscle is what lets you live an independent, strong life well into your 60s, 70s, and beyond.
Walking doesn’t build muscle. Strength training does.
And here’s something else walking won’t do for you — protect your bones.
Bone density is a big deal, especially as we get older. Every year after your 30s, your body naturally starts losing bone mass. Left unchecked, that leads to brittle bones, fractures, and a much higher risk of serious injury from something as simple as a fall. It’s one of those things nobody thinks about until it becomes a problem.
The good news? Strength training and weightlifting are some of the best things you can do to fight back. When you lift, your muscles pull on your bones. That stress — the good kind — signals your body to build more bone tissue and keep your bones strong and dense. CrossFit does exactly that. Deadlifts, squats, cleans, pull-ups — every one of those movements is working your bones just as hard as your muscles.
Walking just doesn’t create that kind of demand on your body. It’s not enough to move the needle on bone density.
That’s what we do here at StrongArm. Every single class. We move, we lift, we push, we pull — and we do it in a way that is designed for real people with real lives.
You don’t have to choose between walking and CrossFit. Do both. Walk on your off days. Get outside and enjoy it. But do not let yourself believe that the walk alone is enough, because your body deserves more than that.
If you have been feeling like you are spinning your wheels and not seeing the results you want, I would love to talk. Let’s figure out what’s missing and get you on the right track.
