Why did we start our Legends Program?

Our Legends program started a little over a year ago and it is for those who are 55 years and older.

Working at a physical therapy and health club for over 10 years, having a membership to a commercial gym, and listening to this age group talk outside of the gym, it was clear to me that the perception of what we should do as we age is flawed.

Doctors, therapist, and other some other medical professionals think that this age group should be doing water aerobics, easy slow walks, very light weight while seated, and using machines. None of these types of exercise is going to help you prepare and keep the fitness needed to do things later in life.

Think about what we need to do to be independent and live by our selves as we age:

  • Lay on the ground and get back up.
  • Sit on a low chair or a low toilet.
  • Carry groceries in from the car.
  • Go up and down steps.. sometimes while carrying groceries.
  • Lift things over our heads to put them on the top shelf.
  • Catch our balance if we trip over something.
  • Take the trash out to the trash cans and then out to the street.

This is just a few of them. The list can go on and on.

I’m a believer that you don’t go in the nursing home because you are sick. You go in the nursing home because you no longer have the fitness to take care of yourself.

Our Legends athletes are working on their balance. They are picking objects up from the ground and putting them overhead. They are carrying objects to work on grip strength and core strength. They are getting on the ground and getting back up (some of us are working hard to get the fitness to be able to do this for the first time!). They are doing all the things needed to be complete badasses for the rest of their lives!

They are also getting the social networking needed to be happy! These athletes laugh, joke, push each other, and keep each other accountable.

Their fitness is better now than it has been for a long time!

I was also tired of hearing people say “oh I can’t do that” or “I’m too old to do that stuff”. I knew this is what people needed. I knew that we can get people to do this stuff. Most of us can’t do all the things on day 1, and that is perfectly fine. We have progressions and options to fit everyone where they are at. We should be doing things to help with the deficiencies that we have. We should be doing things to get us closer to being fully independent.

So, I created a program to show everyone that you CAN do this stuff! We currently have 8 people in this class and they absolutely love it! Every one of them is getting so much healthier and so much more fit every time they come in!
